The Office for National Statistics tracks a select list of 700 typical goods and services (the \u2018basket\u2019) to measure the cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>It has just announced its 2022 list, which no longer includes men\u2019s suits, despite them having been a staple item since the basket began in 1947.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changes to the basket<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The changes in the 2022 basket reflect the ways our lives have changed over the past three years due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>As more of us work from home, sales of men\u2019s suits have fallen. And because we\u2019re not buying lunch near our offices, doughnut sales are down too. We\u2019re spending more on our pets, more on vegetarian and plant-based foods, and more on antibacterial wipes. We\u2019re exercising more, and doing more at-home activities. Here are some of the changes to the latest basket.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No longer in the basket:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men\u2019s suits<\/li>\n<li>Doughnuts<\/li>\n<li>Domestic coal (domestic sales will be banned in the UK in 2023)<\/li>\n<li>Double beds (replaced by king sized beds)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Now included in the basket:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men\u2019s blazers<\/li>\n<li>Meat-free sausages, chickpeas and lentils<\/li>\n<li>Antibacterial surface wipes<\/li>\n<li>Sports bras\/crop tops<\/li>\n<li>Pet collars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can read more about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/mar\/14\/mens-suit-uk-inflation-basket-covid-changes-ons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the new basket here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keeping up with our changing lifestyles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each country\u2019s basket of inflation goods is a nice snapshot of current lifestyles \u2013 and if working from home continues to be prevalent, these changes could be permanent.
